MSF initiates HPDE/Track Day category; Ambassador named:

The Motorsport Safety Foundation has created a great initiative as a virtual community gathering place for a wide range of motorsport disciplines - road racing, drag racing, oval track racing, karting, marine motorsports, and emphasis on the high-value supporting roles of track workers, medical and rescue teams, pit crews and more. In addition to the numerous channels of motorsports competition, 10s of thousands of grassroots enthusiasts across the USA participate in non-competition High-Performance Driver Education events for fun. Also known as track days, this is the fundamental entry-point for hands-on participation by sports car owners everywhere. Now, the MSF recognizes the importance that HPDE track events have to the motorsports hobby. My name is Mark Hicks, and I am honored to be selected as the first Ambassador to the MSF representing the HPDE/Track Day category. I have been the General Manager and Director of Chin Motorsports since 2004. Chin Motorsports is one of the leading providers of HPDE track events in the country. Over the past 12 years, that has provided me with the opportunity to participate in and lead more than 450 track events, 700+ days on track, at more than 30 road course venues. I'm fortunate to have done a lot of coaching, both in-car and remotely, and developed content for and led classroom sessions for advanced driver education. I have experience in motorsports event management, driver coaching, track safety, and best practices for HPDE track events. I've also done quite a few laps myself  =) .  I'd welcome the opportunity to address any questions users may have about HPDE track days. The questions I really look forward to are the ones I've never heard before! Thanks for visiting the HPDE forum.

Welcome Mark!  I am very excited to see how this develops.  There is so much to learn from the different HPDE schools and I hope many will use this forum to look for solutions to their issues and problems.

I am so appreciative that you are the Ambassador for this important HPDE Category in the MSF Forums.  Thank you for accepting the role, and for helping to lead our needed discussion.  I feel that the next few months, during the 2016-17 offseason, will focus attention on several important subjects with strong implications to the HPDE community.  I look forward to each of these opportunities, and commit to help with fact-based consideration and careful decisions.

We (the Audi Club of North America) are running an event at Daytona this coming December 9, 10, 11th.

I don't know where you are based - but this is a HPDE event - and there should be approximately 120 - 150 participants. They will range from total 'newbies' to full on race cars (probably there to get in some practice for the Rolex 24).

I am an instructor for the Audi club - and have been involved in HPDE events since the mid 1980's. I have done over 80 HPDE events. I will be there with my Audi RS 4 - and hope you can make it.

I have initiated a plan with our 'local' Audi dealreship - that I call a "Scholarship" program (since it is a "Driver Education" event). The dealer is backing several of their best customers to attend the event. In addition, they will have a few cars on display.

My wife it the 'on site' registrar - and one of the eventmasters will be coming to our home (from Ohio) to spend the night on Wednesday the 8th. We will do the packet stuffing - then will head to the track for he and the other eventmaster - to attend the meeting with the Daytona track personnel. Registration then opens ~ 1:00 for participants to begin signing in.

Tom, thanks for posting. Naturally, I'm fully familiar with the ACNA event at Daytona. 'Preciate your invitation, but, I'm also the director of Chin Motorsports, and we have a fully sold-out event at Sebring on the same dates, Dec 10-11. So, I'll be occupied then. I hope our paths cross another time.
