What do you guys think should be the annual cost of safety-related items for racers? With things such as head & neck restraints, seat belts, fireproof items, etc., what should racers budget for every season?
Safety is an aspect of a racing budget that should not have a price limit. Cutting corners to meet a budget may save a driver some money for consumables; however, the price of poor or failed safety equipment could be terminal.
That said, safety items are not replaced every year. Helmets, HANS, suits, belts, seats, nets, fire bottles, all have dates on them. Drivers should make it a point to get the the best fitting items that meets the safety requirements, and budget accordingly to replace those items by their expiry dates.
I'm very hard pressed to put a price on my life ... 100% of the safety budget? [;)]
I have helped numerous drivers out of cars over the years and all of them will tell you that the safety equipment is something you don't cut corners on, since it is what is going to save your life.
