Haas team boss Guenther Steiner believes Formula 1's stewards are influenced by the prior reputations and standing of the drivers and teams they deal with, despite efforts to remain impartial. Romain Grosjean was impeded by Max Verstappen during qualifying for the recent Hungarian Grand Prix, but Verstappen escaped censure when the stewards decided the wet conditions combined with another car slowing down in front of him meant he hadn't impeded the Haas unnecessarily, as defined in the rules. In qualifying for the 2017 British GP, Lewis Hamilton also avoided a penalty ...

Richard Petty Motorsports driver Darrell 'Bubba' Wallace Jr admitted he was "scared" during the 'hardest crash of his career' in the NASCAR Cup series race at Pocono on Sunday. Wallace was unhurt in the crash, which was caused by a brake failure as he entered Turn 1 while trying to hold off Stewart-Haas Racing's Aric Almirola with five laps to go. He opted to run down the banking to the grass infield in an attempt to slow the car before the #43 Chevrolet collided sideways with the outside wall at Turn 2. Wallace climbed out of the car unaided before being checked in the infield care...

STEWARDS' DECISION The stewards reviewed the video of the pit stop of Car 9 at 16:07 and heard from the team representative. Rally Isle of Man looks to have been given an 11th hour reprieve. Last week, it emerged that the Department of Infrastructure was threatening to pull the plug on the event amid safety concerns. It declined to issue a road closure authorization. And in a summary report to CoMin, the department said it had "unfortunately and reluctantly" come to the conclusion that Rally IoM is not "competent to organize a safely run event." But following a meeting between DoI officials and members of the organizing team, the government has announced a series of conditions have been established for the safe...

Formula 1 can solve the safety challenges posed by banning tyre warmers in 2021 according to engineers from two of the top teams. As RaceFans revealed today, F1 plans to introduce a new tyre specification in 2021 which will include a ban on tyre warmers, a move to 18-inch wheel sizes and other changes. F1 has been unsuccessful in previous attempts to ban tyre warmers, which are not allowed in other high-level championships such as IndyCar. The safety challenges posed by the need to warm the tyres up quickly after pit stops has been one of the biggest challenges. However Renault’s...

Williams has introduced a new front wing design for the German Grand Prix as part of a Formula 1 update package it hopes will make its car more predictable. A fortnight after a disastrous British Grand Prix, where both its cars had to start from the pitlane in the wake of a floor stall issue that ruined qualifying, the team is hoping for a breakthrough with its new parts. Rather than providing more downforce, the idea behind the wing change is to improve the car's balance to give drivers Sergey Sirotkin and Lance Stroll greater confidence. Speaking about the wing changes, Sirotkin said: "...

Trident Motorsport has parted ways with banned Haas Formula 1 junior driver Santino Ferrucci, after the Formula 2 driver crashed into his teammate and drove with a phone in his hand. Ferrucci is banned for the next two events – Hungary and Spa – after driving into the left-rear of Arjun Maini's car on the cool-down lap after the Silverstone Sprint race. The two had clashed in both Silverstone races. Ferrucci was also fined €66,000 for driving without a glove on, also holding a mobile phone while transitioning between paddocks in his F2 car. Trident has cited Ferrucci's actions,...

Former F1 test driver Daniel Juncadella says F1 should use the stewards to control "crazy" and "aggressive" drivers. Many have complained about the inconsistency of the FIA stewards' rulings, but Juncadella, who now races in DTM, thinks that inconsistency could have a role to play. "I think past actions should be remembered," the Spaniard told AS newspaper. "Take Magnussen for example. I've already said on Twitter that he's crazy, all the way back to Formula 3. I think every time he does something even dubious, he should be penalized. "It's the same with Verstappen, who is super...

Formula 1 technical chiefs have been called to a special meeting with the FIA at the Hungarian Grand Prix to discuss potential changes to mirror rules to improve driver visibility. Drivers have regularly complained about poor rear view under the current regulations. An initial FIA move to push through new rules in time for the Singapore GP on safety grounds had to be abandoned because it needed World Motor Sport Council approval. Instead the FIA has told F1 teams that it wants to meet with technical directors at the Hungaroring in a fortnight's time to discuss what can be done for 2018 and...
